A Brief History of Gunung Leuser National Park

Around 1920, a researcher who was also a Dutch geologist named FC Van Heurn was given permission to conduct research and also explore the natural wealth of oil and minerals in Aceh by the Government of the Dutch Colony. during the research he did not find a large mineral content instead he met with many traditional leaders there, who wanted the Dutch Colony Government to care about the ecosystems on Mount Leuse.
This desire was conveyed by Van Heurn to the Dutch Colonial Government, then he discussed and invited traditional leaders to urge the Dutch Colony Government to provide the status of Mount Leuser as  a conservation area. 

The desire of the local community was realized on February 6, 1934 , with the meeting of Tapaktuan which resulted in a declaration named "Tapaktuan Declaration". after the meeting, on July 3, 1934, the Gunung Leuser Nature Reserve was formed with an area of ​​142,800 ha, and later developed into the Kluet Wildlife Reserve, South Langkat Nature Reserve, West Langkat Nature Reserve and Natural Reserve.
Then during the reign of the Republic of Indonesia, precisely on December 10, 1976 Kappi Wildlife Sanctuary was formed which was located in Southeast Aceh with an area of ​​150,000 ha. and followed by the establishment of the Gunung Leuser Nature Conservation Center . a few years later, on March 6, 1980, the existence of the Gunung Leuser National Park was formalized by the Government of the Republic of Indonesia.
